Merced is a city of about 92,000 people on Highway 99, the county seat of Merced County and home to UC Merced. Census figures show two things that matter for a car policy here: a large group of long-distance commuters, and many households with three or more vehicles. Via Rapida quotes by phone from Stockton, San Jose, and San Rafael. There is no Merced office.
That one-hour group is large for a city of this size and is the clearest rating question in Merced. Carriers ask the miles to work and the miles per year, and a driver who commutes to Modesto, Fresno, or the Bay Area is in a different band than one who works across town. Give the real numbers; an understated commute is a common reason a carrier re-rates a policy. Carpools are worth mentioning too, because some carriers ask about business or shared use. Census Reporter profile: Merced (pulled October 2026).
Of about 27,950 Merced households, about 7,000 have three or more vehicles available, roughly one in four, and about 2,500 have none (table B25044). Renter households are a little over half of the total. A house with three or four vehicles usually also has several drivers, and that is where policies go wrong:
| Merced household | What to tell the carrier |
|---|---|
| Adult children living at home with their own cars | List every licensed driver in the household; carriers decide who must be rated or excluded |
| A UC Merced student driving a parent’s car | Where the car is kept during the school year and who drives it most |
| A work truck parked at the house | Whether it is owned by an employer or used for business; that may need a commercial policy |
| A car that sits unused | Whether it stays insured, or goes on Planned Non-Operation with the DMV |
The DMV’s insurance requirements page lists California’s minimum liability as $30,000 for injury or death to one person, $60,000 for more than one person, and $15,000 for property damage, and says comprehensive or collision insurance does not meet the requirement. Those limits pay other people. A long Highway 99 commute raises the stakes of a crash with an uninsured driver, so we quote uninsured motorist coverage and collision on every Merced policy and you choose. Merced has a field office: Merced DMV, 1313 W 12th Street, Merced, CA 95340. Its page lists a self-serve kiosk and showed the week of October 12, 2026 as Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8am–5pm, Wednesday 9am–5pm, closed weekends. Registration needs proof of insurance, and the DMV’s insurance page says to notify the DMV before you cancel a policy, so line up the new policy before the old one ends. A family in north Merced has four vehicles and four drivers: two parents, a son who commutes to a warehouse job in Modesto, and a daughter at UC Merced. One carrier rates the son’s car at long-commute mileage and lists the daughter as an occasional driver. A second wants the work truck the father brings home on a separate commercial policy. A third declines because of a recent at-fault accident. We read each answer back and the family chooses. This page prints no premium because it depends on drivers, vehicles, ZIP, and limits.
