Driving to Mexico? Same-Day Mexico Car Insurance From California (2026)

Mexican law does not recognize US auto insurance — to drive in Mexico legally you need a policy from a Mexico-authorized insurer, with liability at minimum. We've issued same-day Mexico travel policies since 2013 in daily, weekly, and 6-month terms. Bring your vehicle info, travel dates, and the names of everyone driving to any of our offices — Stockton (956 W. Robinhood Dr), San Jose (25 N. 14th St), San Rafael (9 Vivian St) — and leave with the policy in hand before your trip. Se habla español.

The Rule Every Border Driver Needs to Know

Your US policy stops at the border — Mexican law only recognizes a Mexican policy.

It doesn't matter how good your California coverage is, how long you've had it, or what your agent back home told you about "extended territory." Under Mexican law, proof of financial responsibility for an accident on Mexican roads must come from an insurer authorized to operate in Mexico. Some US policies extend limited physical damage coverage a few miles past the border, but that does not satisfy Mexican liability requirements — and liability is the part the authorities care about after a crash.

What Can Happen Without It

This is the part families learn the hard way on a holiday trip. If you're in an accident in Mexico without valid Mexican liability coverage, your vehicle can be impounded — and you can be detained until responsibility for the damages is resolved. That's not a scare tactic; it's how financial responsibility works under Mexican law when there's no insurer standing behind you. A Mexico policy changes the entire situation: it's proof of responsibility, and it comes with claims adjusters and legal assistance on the Mexican side who handle the process for you.

Same-Day Policies: How It Works

Issuing Mexico travel policies has been one of our core services since we opened in 2013 — it's a big part of why families across the Central Valley and the Bay Area stop by before every December trip. The process is genuinely same-day:

  1. Come in or call — Stockton, San Jose, or San Rafael, no appointment needed.
  2. Give us the trip details — vehicle, dates, drivers.
  3. Pick your termdaily (weekend trips), weekly (holiday visits), or 6-month (if you cross several times a year, this usually beats buying trip-by-trip).
  4. Leave with the policy in hand — printed proof of coverage that Mexican authorities recognize.

Across our three California offices — 4,500+ active customers and 2,080 new policies written in 2025 — the pre-trip Mexico policy is one of the most common walk-in requests we handle, especially November through January.

What to Bring

If the vehicle is financed, mention it — some lenders have their own requirements for taking a financed vehicle across the border, and it's better to sort that out before the trip than at the crossing.

Tips From 13 Years of Writing These Policies

Buy before the border, not at it

Border-booth pricing is built for people with no other option, and buying in a rush is how coverage details get missed. Buying from a licensed California office days before the trip costs you nothing extra and gives you time to actually read what you bought.

Cover the full trip — plus a cushion

Match the policy dates to your real travel dates, and if there's any chance you'll stay a couple of extra days, cover them. An accident on the drive home, one day after the policy expired, is the most painful phone call we get.

Consider theft and physical damage for newer vehicles

Liability-only satisfies the law, but if you're taking a newer truck or SUV, adding theft and physical damage protects the vehicle itself. For many of the vehicles our customers drive down, the truck is worth far more than the cost difference on the policy.

Keep the policy where the driver can reach it

Glove box, not the suitcase in the trailer. If you're stopped or in an accident, you want the printed policy in hand immediately.

Crossing soon? Call ahead with your vehicle info and travel dates and we'll have the Mexico policy ready when you walk in — same day, in English or Spanish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my US auto insurance cover me in Mexico?

No. Mexican law does not recognize US auto insurance. To drive legally in Mexico you need a policy issued by an insurer authorized in Mexico — at minimum liability coverage. Some US policies extend limited physical damage near the border, but that does not satisfy Mexican liability law.

What happens if I have an accident in Mexico without Mexican insurance?

An accident without valid Mexican liability coverage can mean your vehicle is impounded and you can be detained by authorities until responsibility for damages is resolved. A Mexico policy from an authorized insurer gives you proof of financial responsibility plus claims and legal assistance in Mexico.

Can I really get a Mexico car insurance policy the same day as my trip?

Yes. We've issued same-day Mexico travel policies since 2013. Walk into any of our three California offices — Stockton, San Jose, or San Rafael — with your vehicle information, travel dates, and the names of everyone driving, and you can leave with the policy in hand before your trip. Daily, weekly, and 6-month terms are available.

What do I need to bring to buy a Mexico policy?

Three things: your vehicle information (year, make, model, VIN — your current registration or insurance card works), your travel dates, and the name and license of everyone who will drive in Mexico. If the vehicle is financed, tell us — some lenders have requirements for taking the vehicle across the border.
