A plain-English guide to renters insurance for North Hollywood tenants — realistic monthly cost, what is and is not covered in an apartment (including the earthquake question), the landlord-requirement letter, and how to get proof of coverage the same day.

Most North Hollywood renters pay about $15 to $28 a month for a standard policy — typically $20,000–$30,000 in personal property coverage plus $100,000 in liability. That is coffee-budget money for coverage that rebuilds your apartment’s contents after a fire or break-in, pays your hotel if the unit becomes unlivable, and answers for you if a guest is injured or your bathtub floods the unit below.
What it does not cover: earthquake. Like every standard California renters policy, earthquake damage is excluded — that is a separate policy through the CEA, and in the Valley it is worth a real conversation rather than a shrug. Ask us for both numbers and decide with the facts.
The East Valley’s renter claims are not exotic: break-ins and package theft in older buildings without controlled entry; kitchen and balcony fires that spread unit-to-unit in garden-style complexes, where your landlord’s policy rebuilds the structure but pays nothing — zero — for your belongings; and water damage from aging plumbing in mid-century buildings. Every one of those lands on the tenant’s policy, which is exactly why nearly every NoHo lease now requires one.
Most North Hollywood buildings now require tenants to carry renters insurance and name the landlord or management company as an interested party (sometimes written “additional interest”). That is routine: it just means the insurer notifies them if the policy lapses. Send us the exact wording from your lease and we issue the policy with the certificate the same day — usually fast enough for a move-in appointment booked for that afternoon.
We do not have a North Hollywood office and you do not need one. Quotes take a few minutes by phone or text, the policy is signed electronically, and proof of coverage goes to you and your landlord by email the same day. Our licensed staff work from Stockton, San Jose and San Rafael and serve all of Los Angeles County remotely — English y español.
Often, yes. Most carriers apply a multi-policy discount when an auto and a renters policy sit together, and in Los Angeles County — where auto premiums are among the highest in the state — the renters policy can come close to paying for itself in the auto discount alone. We quote it both ways and show you the two numbers side by side.
