An SR-22 is not a type of auto insurance and not a separate policy you buy off a menu. It is a certificate of financial responsibility that a California-authorized insurer files electronically with the State of California to show that a liability policy is in force. Courts or the DMV order that filing after events such as a DUI, driving without insurance, or a license suspension. The filing period in California is commonly three years measured from the incident or conviction date — not from the day you first walk in. If the underlying policy lapses, the insurer must notify the state, and the license problem returns.
