What "Full Coverage" Means in California

"Full coverage" is not a coverage name in California law or on a policy. In everyday use it means a policy with liability plus comprehensive and collision on your own car, and it is what lenders and lease companies usually require.

The CDI automobile terms list has no entry for "full coverage." It defines the pieces instead: collision pays for damage to your car from contact with another vehicle or object, comprehensive pays for other damage such as fire, theft, vandalism, or flood, and the deductible applies to those two coverages only. Liability is the part the law requires; Vehicle Code §16056 sets the minimum at 30/60/15 for policies issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2025.

What it does not mean

Full coverage does not automatically include uninsured motorist, rental, towing, or gap coverage. Read the declarations page. Compare in full coverage vs liability. Spanish: cobertura total. Index: glossary.
