Registration Renewal and the Year Sticker

A registration renewal keeps a California vehicle's registration current and produces the month and year tabs, the stickers drivers call tags, that belong on the license plate. Vehicle Code section 5204 puts those current tabs on the rear plate. Truck tractors, and commercial vehicles with a declared gross vehicle weight of 10,001 pounds or more, display them on the front plate.

The DMV renewal page requires insurance on file unless the vehicle is exempt, such as a trailer. Proof is shown at renewal, and registration is suspended if it never arrives. From July 1, 2024 through January 1, 2030, section 5204(a)(2) says an expired tab alone is not a stop before the second month after expiration. An officer who stopped the vehicle for another reason may cite the tabs sooner, after confirming no current registration is on file. A lost, stolen, damaged, or unreadable year sticker needs a substitute and the substitute-sticker fee. The month sticker is replaced without that fee. No stickers issue if the vehicle is not currently registered.
