Expired Tags in California: What the Ticket Really Costs and How to Fix It Fast (2026)

Expired Tags in California: What the Ticket Really Costs and How to Fix It Fast (2026)

Driving with expired registration tags in California violates Vehicle Code §4000(a): the car has to be currently registered to be on the road. There is no single statewide ticket amount. Counties adopt the Judicial Council Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules and then add their own assessments, so the number you owe is the one on the citation and on that court’s 2026 bail schedule. Separately, the DMV charges late fees with no grace period. Vehicle Code §4601 and the DMV penalties page say fees are due on or before the expiration date on the registration card — the sticker only shows the month and year. Past six months, an officer can tow the car under §22651(o). Many citations are correctable once you renew and show proof. Renewal also needs valid insurance on file. Call (209) 670-1556.

What the officer cites, and why the ticket total is not one number

Vehicle Code §4000(a) is the registration requirement: you may not drive, move, or leave a vehicle on a highway unless it is registered. §5204(a) is the display rule — current month and year tabs on the rear plate. Officers and plate readers catch both, because the sticker’s color and year are visible from the patrol car. The line on the 2026 Judicial Council schedule for this stop is §4000(a)(1), “No Evidence of Current Registration.”

We do not print a statewide ticket total. The Judicial Council adopts the Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules (2026 edition, effective January 1, 2026, California Rules of Court, rule 4.102). Each county court then adopts that schedule and can add local assessments, so two drivers with the same code section can owe different amounts. Read the figure on your citation and confirm it on the bail schedule for the court named on the ticket. One published copy of the 2026 schedule is the San Francisco Superior Court PDF; your county’s PDF controls your case.

What the DMV charges to renew late (Vehicle Code §4601)

The court ticket and the DMV penalty are different bills. The DMV penalties page says the department does not offer a grace period. Pay on or before the expiration date on the registration card, or penalties apply on top of the regular fees. The DMV handbook cites Vehicle Code §§4601 and 9552 for that deadline. Penalties are a percentage of the vehicle license fee and any weight fee, plus a flat registration late fee, plus a CHP late fee:

How late the payment isPercent of vehicle license fee and weight feeRegistration late feeCHP late fee
1–10 days10%$10$10
11–30 days20%$15$15
31 days to one year60%$30$30
More than one year, up to two years80%$50$50
More than two years160%$100$100

Source: California DMV, “Penalties,” for vehicles already registered in California. The percentage applies to the vehicle license fee due for that year, and to any weight fee. These are state fees, the same at a DMV office or a licensed registration service. A small service fee for same-visit processing is quoted before anything is submitted.

If the car has not been driven at all, a Planned Nonoperation filing is a different path, and late penalties can still be due. See planned nonoperation in California.

Past six months: the tow rule

Once registration has been expired for more than six months, Vehicle Code §22651(o) lets an officer have the vehicle towed and stored. You then deal with the tow, storage, back registration fees, the DMV penalties in the table above, and the citation before the car comes out. Renew before that line.

Is an expired-tags ticket a fix-it ticket?

Often, if the citation is marked correctable. The 2026 bail schedule says that in a Vehicle Code §4000(a) case, §40152 requires proof of registration, proof the registration fees were paid, or proof the vehicle was junked, before the offense can be dismissed. The correctable line and the uncorrected line are different rows on that schedule, and counties do not all print the same total. Read your citation: it names the court and whether you can submit proof of correction. The proof only works after the registration is actually current.

How do I renew a registration that is already late?

  1. Read the expiration date on the registration card, not just the month and year on the sticker.
  2. Confirm liability insurance is active and on file. If the policy lapsed, fix that before you pay. California’s current minimum limits are explained on the California car insurance guide — this page does not restate them.
  3. Get a smog certificate if the renewal notice says one is required.
  4. Pay the regular registration fees plus the DMV penalty for how many days you are past the card date. Use the table above, or the DMV fee calculator if you want the dollar total for your vehicle.
  5. Put the new sticker on the plate. If you already have a citation, take the new registration to the court named on it.

A lost or stolen registration card or sticker is a different transaction. Use the replacement guide instead of this page.

If the car will not be driven, see planned nonoperation. The DMV says a PNO may be filed up to 90 days after expiration only if the vehicle was not operated, and late penalties can still be due.

Why the renewal rejects: insurance has to be on file

The renewal is often late because the registration is suspended for no insurance, not because someone forgot the sticker. Vehicle Code §16028 requires proof of financial responsibility. Carriers report policies electronically. If yours cancels and nothing replaces it, the state can suspend the registration, and the online renewal or kiosk rejects the transaction. Buying a new policy starts coverage; it does not by itself clear the suspension. The walk-through is registration suspended after an insurance lapse.

We are a licensed brokerage and a registration service, so both halves can be handled in one visit at Stockton or San Jose, or by phone through the Central Valley registration service. State registration fees are the same everywhere. A small service fee is quoted first.

Renew before the stop

California authorizes licensed private businesses to process vehicle registration. The state fees are identical no matter where you renew — what the small service fee buys you is walking in without an appointment, being helped in English or Spanish, and leaving with the sticker on the plate the same visit instead of gambling on the mail while the clock runs on your penalties.

This isn't a side business for us. Across our three California offices we processed 3,301 vehicle-registration transactions in 2025, and 1,773 more in the first seven months of 2026 — renewals, replacement stickers, title transfers, and the insurance-hold cases nobody else untangles. We've served 4,500+ active customers since 2013.

Bring your renewal notice (or just the plate number), photo ID, proof of insurance, and payment. Most renewals take minutes — and if there's a hold on the record, we'll tell you exactly what it takes to clear it before you pay anything.

The Ticket Is the Symptom. The Insurance Is Usually the Cause.

Most expired-tag renewals we untangle were never late by accident — the registration was on hold because the auto policy lapsed. California monitors insurance electronically on every registered vehicle, so the sticker cannot be released until coverage is active again. We are a licensed brokerage and a registration service, so both halves get fixed in one visit.

La mayoría de las renovaciones atrasadas no son por olvido — la registración está detenida porque se venció la aseguranza. Arreglamos las dos cosas en la misma visita.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is a ticket for expired tags in California?

There is no single statewide ticket amount. Driving without current registration violates Vehicle Code §4000(a). Counties adopt the Judicial Council Uniform Bail and Penalty Schedules and then add their own assessments, so the amount is the one on your citation and on that court's bail schedule. DMV late fees are separate and are set statewide.

What does the DMV charge if I renew late?

The DMV penalties page says there is no grace period. Under Vehicle Code §4601, penalties are a percentage of the vehicle license fee and any weight fee, plus a registration late fee and a CHP late fee. The published steps are $10 and $10 at 1 to 10 days, $15 and $15 at 11 to 30 days, $30 and $30 from 31 days to one year, $50 and $50 from one to two years, and $100 and $100 after two years, plus the percentage of the vehicle license fee.

Can my car be towed for expired tags in California?

Yes. Once registration has been expired for more than six months, an officer can have the vehicle towed and impounded under Vehicle Code §22651(o). You then owe the tow, storage, back registration fees, DMV penalties, and the citation.

Is an expired tags ticket a fix-it ticket?

Often, if the officer marks it correctable. Vehicle Code §40152 requires proof of current registration, or proof the fees were paid, before a §4000(a) case can be dismissed. Read the citation for the court and whether a proof of correction is allowed.

Can I renew if my insurance lapsed?

Not until insurance is on file. California monitors insurance under Vehicle Code §16028, and a lapse can suspend the registration so online and kiosk renewals reject you. Fix the policy first, then clear the suspension and renew. Call (209) 670-1556.

How do I renew a registration that is already expired?

Read the expiration date on the registration card, confirm insurance is active, get a smog certificate if the notice requires one, and pay the renewal fees plus the DMV late penalty for how long you waited. A licensed registration service can do that in one visit when the record is clear.
